Cowans Gap Activities
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs:
Thursday, October 25, 2 p.m.: Edible Plants – Meet at the nature center to discover some of nature’s edibles. Weather permitting we will take a stroll around the park to see them firsthand!
4 p.m., Fall Overlook Hike - Join the park naturalist for a hike to the overlook to take in the beauty of the season from above. Wear sturdy shoes and dress accordingly for the weather.
Friday, October 26, 11 a.m.: Photo Scavenger Hunt – Bring your camera or borrow one of ours to set out on a treasure hunt of photos. Pick up your list at the nature center and return when it is completed for a prize.
1 p.m. Birds of Prey – Stop by the nature center to learn about some of our local hunters that strike from the sky!
Saturday October 27, Lanterns and Legends Festival! 1 p.m., Fall Foliage Walk – Stroll around the lake with the naturalist and take in the beauty of the season. Maples and poplars should be blazing red and yellow as they give us one last show before winter. Meet at the nature center.
3 p.m. to 7 p.m, Lanterns and Legends Festival – Join us at Pavilion 2 for the annual festival. We will be carving pumpkins, roasting seeds,and watching fresh apple cider being made. Try our spiced hot cider and take a walk down our Tricky Trail. Pumpkins will be available on a first-come basis. You may also bring your own to decorate.
7 p.m., Legends of Cowans Gap Walk – Spooky tales and local legends ... can you tell which are based on fact and which are made up? Join the park naturalist at the beach house where we will set out on a walk around the lake and learn some on the lesser known stories of the area.
Sunday October 28, 11 a.m., Owls of PA – Stop by the nature center to learn about these unique night creatures. Learn about the special adaptations they have to be able to hunt at night and inspect an owl pellet to see what they catch for dinner!
1 p.m., Lost!! – Basic Survival Skills for Young Campers. While designed to teach young campers what to do should they get separated from their group while in the woods, this program would be a great refresher for our seasoned outdoors men and women as well. Learn some tricks that will help you be found and find out what it is you need to survive and how to get it! This program will be held at the amphitheater.
Monday October 29, 10 a.m. – Adventures! Join the park naturalist for an adventure at Cowans Gap! Meet at the park office and we will set out to discover some of the hidden natural treasures that can be found here at the park. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes.
