Extends Thanksgiving Day Dinner Invitation
To The Editor:
There’s a chill in the air, the mountains are dressed in their fall colors, and ... eggnog is on the store shelves, so that must mean Thanksgiving is just around the corner.
The Metcalfe family would like to invite you to share our ninth annual free Thanksgiving Dinner to be held Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22, 2012. The dinner will be held at the Lemasters Community Center, just off Steele Avenue in Lemasters, Pa., from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Anyone and everyone is invited to come eat with us, (We served 1,022 dinners last year.) So rip up that shopping list, put away the card table, and come and enjoy food, friends and fun with us. All we ask is that you give us a call at 717-328-2366 by Monday, November 19, with the number of people that are coming so we know how many to prepare for.
This year’s dinner will be a little bittersweet for our family. As some of you may remember, the basis of this dinner was overhearing a conversation between a younger and older member of our church family. The younger asked the older what she was doing for Thanksgiving that year, and the older told her that she was going to stay home, that no one had invited her to dinner. I had decided then and there that she would always have a place to go on Thanksgiving. Over the years, she peeled potatoes, baked cakes and ate with us. We lost Amelia since last Thanksgiving, and this year’s dinner is dedicated to her memory.
Meal delivery is available within the Tuscarora School District for the elderly and for those who are physically incapable of coming to the dinner. Just give us a call at the phone number listed above with the number of dinners you need, and, of course, good directions.
As usual, we will also have a potato peeling (and everything else we can do) party on Wednesday, November 21, starting at 7 p.m at the Community Center in Lemasters. (Please, no earlier because I need some time to organize the work stations, catch a little breather, and wait for the Advil to kick in after being there all day!). Anyone who would like to help that evening or on Thanksgiving Day is more than welcome. We never turn down volunteers. And all desserts that show up will be welcome too! Just give us a call so we can give you all the details
Doors will open Thanksgiving Day at 10:45 a.m., and we will begin serving at 11 a.m. Up until serving time, my volunteers will be working on filling the delivery meals, and there is usually mass confusion on our part. So, please have a seat and be patient with us until the serving line is opened for the public.
Be prepared to do your best turkey imitation and get stuffed with us on Thanksgiving Day. We guarantee that you won’t leave hungry! See you on Thanksgiving Day!
