Robert E. Akers
He was born on October 7, 1926, in Altoona, a son of the late Charles W. and Mary Elizabeth (Kagarise) Akers. In August of 1953 in Cumberland, Md., he married Mary B. (Weaver) Akers. She preceded him in death in July 1999.
He is survived by stepdaughter Susan M. White- Wagamen, Chambersburg; brothers: Charles “Pat” Akers, married to Leona (Calhoun), Crystal Spring; Stanley Akers, married to Barbara ( Fluke), Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; James Akers, married to Doris (McCray), Hagerstown; sister-in-law Betty Akers, Crystal Spring; three step-grandchildren: Kenneth Anderson, Shean Anderson and Stacey Palmer; and several nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by a brother, Allen A. Akers; a sister, Lois McGeary; and a nephew, Gregory Akers.
He was of the Methodist faith.
He was a graduate of Warfordsburg High School Class of 1943.
He served in the United States Army 350th Infantry Regiment in Austria, serving as corporal during Korean Conflict from 1951-1953.
For 31 years he served as secretary/treasurer of East Providence Township, also having served as township supervisor for two terms and as auditor for three terms.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing and feeding the deer and turkeys around his home.
He was a member of the Breezewood Senior Citizens.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 8, 2012, at 1 p.m., in the chapel at Akers Funeral Home, Everett. Pastor William Kuhn and Pastor Steve Salisbury officiated. Burial was at Union Memorial Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Everett Area Honor Guard.
