Cowans Gap Activities

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs at Cowans Gap State Park:

Thursday, October 18: 10 a.m., Natures Detectives. Who lives at the park? Join the naturalist as we look for clues. Start at the park office for a walk around the park looking for evidence left behind by some the local residents.

1 p.m. to 3 p.m.: Hair & Bones! Stop by the nature center to investigate some furs and skulls of different animals found at Cowans Gap. Can you figure out which animal they belong to?

Friday, October 19: 11 a.m., PA Natural Symbols. Learn about the things that symbolize our great state while we take a walk down the One Mile Trail. Meet at the nature center.

1 p.m.: Fall Foliage Walk. Stroll around the lake with the naturalist and take in the beauty of the season. Maples and poplars should be blazing red and yellow as they give us one last show before winter. Meet at the nature center.

3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.: Nature Center Open. Stop in and stroll around the center! Enjoy our natural, historical and cultural displays of the local area.

Saturday October 20: 2:30 p.m.: Cowans Gap History. Did you ever wonder why the park is called “ Cowans” Gap? Or how it became a gap? Come to the nature center for a short program on the history of the area – learn about the geology, how the pioneers used the area, and when the CCC built many of our structures.

Sunday October 21: 9:30 a.m.: Morning walk with Mrs. Cowan. Meet Mrs. Cowan at the beach house for a walk around what was once her property. She will tell you about growing up during the Revolutionary War, her secret marriage and life on the frontier. Mrs. Cowan may even project what was to become of her land in the years after her passing that opened the area for the park that is here today.

12:30 p.m.: Footprints on the Planet. Stop by the amphitheater to find out how big of an effect you are having on our planet. Learn ways to reduce the damage we do and increase the benefit we provide.

2 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Leaf Art. Let’s make something out of the beautifully colored leaves that are carpeting the ground at Cowans Gap! Stop at the nature center to create a little natural art!
