The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs:

Thursday, October 4, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Critter Crafts – Stop by the nature center to make a critter using recycled materials while you learn a bit about what makes that critter special. Fun for all ages!

2 p.m., Plessinger Trail Hike – Join the Park Naturalist for a stroll along the Little Aughwick Creek where we will check out some of the changes that are happening as the park’s inhabitants get ready for winter. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a water bottle. Meet at the Plessinger Trailhead.

Friday, October 5, 11 a.m. – Writing with Nature Walk – Meet the naturalist at the amphitheater where we will learn about the various types of writing styles used to describe our natural surroundings. Learn how to become a skilled observer of what is going on around you. We will take a short walk and put our new knowledge and pencils to work.

2 p.m., Storytime by the Lake – Bring your preschool age children to the amphitheater for a brief story and small craft by the lake.

3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Tree Keys – Stop by the nature center to have a look around at our natural and cultural displays and while you are there you can learn how to identify our local trees by their bark, twigs and leaves!

Saturday October 6, 1 p.m., Photo Scavenger Hunt – Start at the nature center with your own camera or borrow one of ours, and set out on a hunt around the park! When you have pictures of all of the items on your list, return to the nature center to claim your prize!

2:30 p.m., Tree ID Kayak – Join the naturalist for a paddle around the lake while we identify some of our trees that are beginning to show their fall colors. Please register at the park office at 717- 485-3948 or with the naturalist at 717-485-9018. You may bring your own boat or borrow one of ours. There is a $10 fee for this program. All participants must be at least 12 years old, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Personal floatation devices are required for this program and will be provided.

6 p.m., Evening Critter Walk – Meet at the Nature Center to set out on a walk in search of some of our furry (and not-so furry) friends at the park. Find out who is getting ready to go to bed and who is just waking up for the night!

Sunday October 7, 9:30 a.m., Birding Walk – Meet at the beach house to set out on a stroll around the lake looking for a last glimpse of our feathered friends before they leave us for warmer areas. While geared toward our younger visitors, this would be a nice walk for most any birding fan.

11:30 a.m., Tracks and Traces – Come to the amphitheater to discover some of the signs the creatures of Cowans Gap leave behind. While animals may often hide before we get a chance to see them, they also leave a lot of traces behind that let us know they are using the trails too! Learn what to look for when you are out for a stroll at the park.

1 p.m., Lost!! Basic Survival Skills for Young Campers – While designed to teach young campers what to do should they get separated from their group while in the woods, this program would be a great refresher for our seasoned outdoors men and women as well. Learn some tricks that will help you be found and find out what it is you need to survive and how to get it! This program will be held at the amphitheater.

Monday October 8, 10 a.m. – Adventures! Join the park naturalist for an adventure at Cowans Gap! Meet at the park office and we will set out to discover some of the hidden natural treasures that can be found here at the park. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes!

2 p.m., Leave No Trace- Hiking – Meet at the am- phitheater for a short walk where we will learn the basic principles of LNT along the way. This interactive program aims to make you a more considerate and environmental friendly hiker and camper.
