Local Women Earn Iron Girl Title

Four county women, Ginny Smith, Denise Mellott, Sarah Cutchall and Linda Heuston, left to right, recently competed in their first-ever triathlon at Rocky Gap State Park near Flintstone, Md., to earn the title of Tri-Columbia Iron Girl. More than 400 tri-state area women, ages 14 through 73, took part in the September 9 endurance race that began in 52-degree weather with a half-mile swim in Lake Habib, then moved to a 16-mile bike ride over mountainous terrain and finished with a three-mile run to the cheers of family and friends. The four triathletes say that completing in the event has inspired them to continue their training, and they plan to compete in next year’s Iron Girl triathlon at Rocky Gap.
