Cowans Gap Activities
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs:.
Friday September 28, 11 a.m.: Fall Flower Walk. Join the park naturalist for a stroll around the park to witness the explosion of fall colors our native wildflowers have to offer this time of year. Meet at the nature center.
1 p.m.: Creatures of Cowans Gap. Stop by the nature center to learn about some of the critters you may find lurking around Cowans Gap. Learn some of the little known facts about some of our most common critters.
Saturday September 29, National Public Lands Day, 9 a. m. to noon: Volunteer Cleanup Day. Join us as we clean up the park and get ready for colder weather. We need help with trail maintenance, bird box building/ cleaning, gardening and many other things. If interested in helping out, please contact the park office at 717-485-3948.
1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Photos by the Lake Hike. Come out to Cowans Gap State Park and join in for a nature photography hike around the lake. Enjoy the beauty of fall with this leisurely hike along the easy hiking Lakeside Trail and capture it with your camera. Along the way learn how nature photography relates to Leave No Trace and pick up tips on taking better nature photos. Along the way keep an eye out for migrating animals, including raptors, and enjoy the beautiful natural scenery. Meet at the park amphitheater.
Sunday September 30, 9 a.m., Walk with Mrs. Cowan – Meet Mrs. Cowan at the beach house for a walk around the lake. She will tell her history as well as some of the history of the park.
11 a.m. Wind Gap Kayak – Enjoy a paddle around the lake while we discuss the formation of the gap and the surrounding area. Bring your own kayak, or borrow one of ours. If borrowing a boat, please register online at www.dcnr.pa.gov under the calendar of events or call Renae Saum at 717-485-9018. Participants must be at least 12 years old, and anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Life jackets are required for this program and will be provided. There is a $10 fee for this program. Meet at the amphitheater.
1 p.m.: Cowans Gap History. Join the park naturalist at the amphitheater to learn about the history of the park. From the French and Indian War and a secret marriage to the CCC and the many boys that helped build the structures you see around the park today.
Monday October 1, 9 a.m.: Morning on the Lake. Join the park naturalist while we float in the morning mist and listen to the park wake up around us. Bring your own kayak, or borrow one of ours. Participants must be at least 12 years old, and anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Life jackets are required for this program and will be provided. 1 p.m., Overlook Hike. Hike to the view above the park and enjoy the changing season. Leaves are beginning to change, hawks are migrating and critters are stashing their supplies for the winter. Meet the park naturalist at the nature center.
