Cowans Gap Activities

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs at Cowans Gap State Park:

Saturday, September 15: 1 p.m. – CSI – Mammology Division. Meet at the amphitheater to learn about GPS and geocaching, then become a detective and see if you can solve the crime! Find the clues hidden in caches around the park to find out who killed Little Brown Bat!

3 p.m.: Compass Chaos. Starting at the amphitheater, you will learn how to use a compass then test your new skills following coordinates around the park. Will you find the finish line?

6: 30 p. m.: Natures Clean-up Crew. Stop by the nature center for a program on the critters that clean up the park. Find out what is hard at work sometimes right under our feet.

Sunday, September 16, 9 a.m.: Walk with Mrs. Cowan. Enjoy a Sunday morning stroll around the lake as Mrs. Cowan tells her tale. A secret wedding, an Indian Chief, and a log cabin all contribute to the story of how Cowans Gap came to be named. Meet at the beach house.

11 a. m.: We All Live Downstream. Did you ever wonder where your water comes from or where it goes? Stop by the amphitheater to learn about watersheds and what you can do to make sure your drinking water, and those downstream from you, stays clean.

Monday September 17, 10 a.m.: Flying Squirrel Walk. Meet at the park office for a short stroll while we look for these furry flying critters.

2 p.m.: Kayak Scavenger Hunt. Join the park naturalist while we paddle around the lake in search of all the things on our lists. Bring your own kayak, or borrow one of ours (We have a few singles and one tandem.) by contacting Renae Saum at 717-485-3948 or registering online at www.DCNR.state.pa.us.
