Franklin-Fulton Reads Program “From Here To There”
On September 8, From Here to There, a two-month community reading celebration begins. Franklin-Fulton Reads is a collaboration of many local nonprofit organizations to promote reading and literacy throughout the region. This year’s theme is travel and activities along historic roads and trails of the region. The kickoff event is a Touch a Truck carnival that will be held from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Manitowoc Crane in Greencastle where trucks and cranes in many shapes and sizes will be available.
This fall’s program features local StoryWalk ® events for families. Coyle Free, Fulton County, Fort Loudon and Grove Family libraries will be hosting reading events that combine an outdoor walk with a story. Featured StoryWalk® books are “Granddaddy’s Highway,” “Berenstain Bears Blaze a Trail,” and “Country Crossing.” Sign up at any of the participating libraries for this family friendly event!
On Saturday, September 29, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., there will be a Photo Hike at Cowan’s Gap State Park. Bring a camera and meet regional naturalist George Barner at the Park Amphitheater for a nature photography hike along the Lakeside Trail.
The celebration also includes a Roads and Trails oral history project that will give people the opportunity to record their personal journeys on historic highways. This part of the program is in conjunction with Shippensburg University students and the LIU 12 Franklin County Literacy Council.
There is also a recommended reading booklist for children, teens and adults, a Lincoln Highway art and photo exhibit at Grove Family Library, a program with renowned Lincoln Highway artist Kevin Kutz and school visits from local author, Harriett Diller.
The libraries invite you to check out a book discussion kit of titles from The Walk series by Richard Paul Evans, Rules of the Road by Joan Bauer, or Here Lies the Librarian by Richard Peck to celebrate great related literature. The libraries also have book kits for preschool and elementary classrooms on the topic. Contact your local library or firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve a book kit today.
The complete schedule of events and related books to read are available at local libraries and online at www.chambersburgreads.or g. All “From Here to There” events are free to Franklin and Fulton County residents.
Franklin-Fulton Reads is sponsored by Franklin County Library System, LIU #12 Franklin County Literacy Council, and many other local organizations.
