Cowans Gap Park Lists Upcoming Activities
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs:.
Thursday September 6: 9:30 a.m., AM Adventure: Meet the park naturalist at the park office for an adventure around the park. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes!
1 p.m.: Litter Brigade. Come and help keep the park beautiful by cleaning up the messes others leave behind. Meet at the nature center.
Friday, September 7: 6 p.m., Monarch Migration. Come to the amphitheater to learn about the incredible journey these beautiful little insects make each year. Learn about their life cycle and find out what is threatening their fragile numbers.
8 p.m., Campfire Weather Lore. Stop by the campfire near the amphitheater to enjoy a discussion of weather folklore. Learn how to read the clouds and how to tell if rain is coming by the bugs! Discover the basis, and the science, behind some of the old weather legends.
Saturday, September 8: 1 p.m., Cowans Gap History. From the French and Indian war and a secret marriage to the Great Depression and the CCC boys who helped build the park. Join us at the amphitheater while we discuss the rich history of Cowans Gap.
2:15 p.m, Birding by Boat. Join the park naturalist for a paddle around the lake in search of some of our feathered friends here at the park. Bring your own kayak or borrow one of ours by calling 717-485-9018 or online at www.dcnr.state.pa.us. Participants must be at least 12 years old and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Life preservers must be worn during this program and will be provided by the park. There is a $10 fee for this program.
6 p.m., Raptors of PA. It’s fall migration time! Join us at the amphitheater to learn what predators are flying the skies over Cowans Gap. Discovers some of their unique adaptations for their long migrations as well as for capturing live prey!
Sunday, September 9, National Grandparents Day: 9 a.m., 5 Senses Walk. Join the park naturalist for a stroll around the park as we discover our five senses and learn how animals use them to survive. Fun for all ages! Meet at the beach house.
11 am: Edible Plants Walk. Stroll around the lake where we will discover some of natures’ edibles along the trail. Meet at the nature center.
1 p. m, Grandparents Walk. It’s National Grandparents Day! Bring your grandchildren and enjoy a stroll around the park to celebrate! Meet at the nature center.
