Young Americans Win Keystone Rally

The McConnellsburg Young Americans U14 baseball team won the fifth Annual In the Net Keystone Rally in Palmyra, Pa. The two-day tournament was held the weekend of August 11 and 12, 2012, and consisted of six teams from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The Young Americans finished with a 4-0 record.

In Saturday’s pool play, the Young Americans defeated the Altoona Curve Juniors 7-2 and the Randolph (N.J.) Rams 15-7. With a 2-0 record, the Young Americans received a first-round bye for Sunday’s

Championship Round. In the semifinals, the Young Americans were once again pitted against the Altoona Curve Junior team. The Young Americans were down 4-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Mc- Connellsburg exploded for 8 runs on 7 hits in the sixth and went on to defeat the Curve 10-4. This win advanced McConnellsburg to the championship game against Mountville Angels.

In the championship game, the Young Americans scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. These two runs proved to be enough as the Young Americans held the Angels scoreless and won the championship game 2-0. During the four games, McConnellsburg outscored their opponents 34-13, while outhitting them 40-21.

The Young Americans combined a balanced hitting attack with tremendous pitching and defense. It was a great team effort by all.

Robert Koontz served as the manager and sponsor of the team, and Timothy Fowler supplied the team with hats.
