William R. Erickson 89, Mercersburg

William R. Erickson, 89, of Mercersburg, Pa., passed away peacefully at his home at 9:10 a.m. Thursday, August 9, 2012.

Born March 28, 1923, at Ramey, Pa., he was a son of the late Victor E. and Loretta Jones Erickson.

Bill was a 1940 graduate of Richland Township High School. Following graduation he worked at Glen L. Martin Co. of Baltimore, Md. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. Bill flew B-25s in World War II with the 321st Bomb Group, 57th Bomb Wing, Squadron 144 - Ancona, Italy. Following his discharge in 1946, he attended the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He then went to work for Berwind White Coal Co. on a surveying crew. He moved to Mercersburg to work for Fry Coal & Stone Co. Bill was employed, for 17 years, as a mining engineer with Pa. Dept. of Mines and Minerals and retired in 1984.

Bill’s memberships include St. John’s Lutheran Church and the LOYALS GROUP, Masonic Lodge #538 of Johnstown where he was a 65-year member, Masonic Order of Sojourners, Tall Cedars and Jaffa Temple, Williamsport, Pennsylvania Consistory, Quiet Birdman Club, Pilots Organization of 1944, Mercersburg Lions Club where he was a 53- year member, life member of VFW Post 6241 and American Legion Post 517, both of Mercersburg, and a former Mercersburg Borough Council member and Tuscarora School Board director.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy E. Wingard Erickson, whom he married July 22, 1950; a daughter, Paulette E., and husband Dale Brown; and a son, Victor P., and wife Rebecca Erickson, both of McConnellsburg, Pa.: three grandchildren: Holly Ann and husband Denny Peck, April Lynn Hawbaker and Nicholas P. Erickson; two great grandsons: Braden and Landon Peck, a step- grandson, Randy, and wife Kelly Brown, two step- greatgrand daughters: Rebecca Brown and Elizabeth Pearl; and one step-great-grandson, Thad Brown; and a sister, Ida Mary, and husband John Ross of Johnstown.

Bill was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 13, 2012, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mercersburg, with Reverends Karina Ramins and Richard A. Seaks officiating. Burial was made in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

A Masonic service by Mt. Zion No. 774 F&AM of Mc- Connellsburg was held on Sunday, August 12, at the funeral home.
