Cowans Gap Activities
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming programs:
Friday August 24, 6:30 p.m., Cowans Gap History. From the French & Indian War and a secret marriage to the Great Depression and the CCC boys who helped build the park. Join us at the amphitheater while we discuss the rich history of Cowans Gap.
8:15 p.m., Bat Talk & Bat Count. Be part of the ongoing research here at Cowans Gap and help the naturalist count our bats! Meet at the bat boxes by the amphitheater to learn about bats and how to count them. Bring a blanket or a chair to sit on.
Saturday August 25, 6:30 p. m. to 8 p. m. Stream Stomp. Join the naturalist for some fun in the Little Aughwick Creek to see how healthy the stream is. Discover who lives under the rocks and the current.Wear old sneakers or water shoes as we will be getting in the creek. Meet at the bridge by the Plessinger Trail head.
8:30 p.m., Yakin’ with the Bats. Enjoy an evening on the lake while we watch the bats come out for the night. Bring your own kayak or borrow one of ours for free. A few single-person kayaks and one tandem will be available to borrow but must be reserved in advance by calling Renae Saum at 717-485-9018 or by registering online. Participants must be at least 12 years old, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Life jackets are required for this program and will be provided. Meet at the amphitheater.
Monday, August 27, 10 a.m. Birding by the Box. Come learn about cavitynesting birds on this gentle walk in the park. Along the way we’ll peek inside the park’s nesting boxes to see if anyone’s using them! Meet at the park office.
1 p.m., Child’s Play-Owls. Bring your preschool-age children to the park for some fun and learning! This week the theme will be owls. Activities for this program may include a story, craft, outdoor exploration or other activity. Playtime can sometimes be messy, so be sure your children are dressed in play clothes and shoes, and have appropriate attire for the outdoors. Child’s play will begin at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 1 pm.
1: 30- 2: 30 p. m., bingo. Stop by the nature center for a game of nature-themed bingo. Bring a friend or the whole family!
