Altoona Regional-Nason May Combine Health Systems
ALTOONA, Pa. (AP) – Altoona Regional Health System and nearby Nason Hospital have signed a non-binding agreement to form a countywide health system in central Pennsylvania.
Altoona Regional was formed eight years ago when Altoona and Bon Secours- Holy Family hospitals merged. The new agreement being reported Friday by the Altoona Mirror could be similar.
Dr. Jeffrey Rosch, an official with the Altoona hospital, says it may also be the only way for Blair County’s hospitals to avoid being “swallowed up’’ by larger urban health centers, like the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center about 85 miles to the west.
Nason is about 15 miles south of Altoona, in Roaring Springs.
If the hospitals combine systems, it could help them share costs and give patients at both more access to specialty medicine.
