Cowans Gap Happenings

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following:

Thursday, August 16, 10:00 a.m.: Litter Brigade – Want to help keep our park looking good and our wildlife safe? Meet at the Nature Center for a walk around the park to clean up some of the messes others leave behind.

1:30 p.m.: Summer Beauties Walk – Come enjoy a stroll around the lake while we identify some of the summer wildflowers in bloom. Meet at the Amphitheater.

Friday August 17, 6:00 p.m.: Tree ID from the water – Identify the trees of Cowans Gap from the water! Bring your own kayak, or borrow one of ours for free! Please register online at www.dcnr.pa.gov under the calendar of events or by calling

Renae Saum at 717-485- 9018. Participants must be at least 12 years old, and anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Life jackets are required for this program and will be provided. Meet at the Amphitheater.

8:00 p.m. Tree ID - Meet at the Nature Center to learn how to identify some of our native trees using diconomous keys. We will look at the leaves, bark and twigs of the trees while taking a short walk.

Saturday, August 18: International Geocaching Day

6:30 p.m.: CSI – Mammology Division – Meet at the Amphitheater to learn about GPS and geocaching, then become a detective and see if you can solve the crime! Find the clues hidden in caches around the park to find out who killed Little Brown Bat!

8: 00 p. m.: Compass Chaos – Starting at the Amphitheater, you will learn how to use a compass, then test your new skills following coordinates around the park. Will you find the finish line?

Sunday, August 19, 9:30 a.m.: Five Senses Walk – Join the park naturalist for a stroll around the park as we discover our five senses and learn how animals use them to survive. Fun for all ages! Meet at the beach house.

11:00 a.m.: Women in the Wild Walk – A program just for the ladies who would like to get out in the woods but don’t want to go it alone! Meet at the Nature Center for a hike around Cowans Gap. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a water bottle.

Monday, August 20, 10:00 a.m.: Birding by the Box – Come learn about cavitynesting birds on this gentle walk in the park. Along the way we’ll peek inside the park’s nesting boxes to see if anyone’s using them! Meet at the Park Office.

1:00 p.m.: Child’s Play- Bats! Bring your preschoolage children to the park for some fun and learning! This week the theme will be bats! Activities for this program may include a story, craft, outdoor exploration, or other activity. Playtime can sometimes be messy, so be sure your children are dressed in play clothes and shoes, and have appropriate attire for the outdoors. Child’s play will begin at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 1:00 p.m.

1:30-2:30 p.m.: BINGO! - Stop by the Nature Center for a game of nature-themed bingo. Bring a friend or the whole family!
