Cowans Gap To Hold Summer Programs
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming programs:.
National Exercise with Your Child Week: August 5-11.
Thursday, August 9: Smokey Bear’s Birthday; 10 a.m., Kids Walk. Join the park naturalist for a walk around the park as we enjoy the outdoors and some games along the way. Meet at the nature center
Noon, Kids Yoga. Meet at the beach house to learn some of the basic moves of yoga. An excellent way to stretch those muscles and get on the move. Any age is welcome, but the moves will be oriented for children. Bring a mat or a towel.
1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m, Kids Games. Stop by the nature center to enjoy some fun nature games. Some games may be outside, so be sure to wear shoes you can run in.
Friday, August 10, National S’mores Day.
2:15 p.m.: Guide To the Universe. Stop by the beach house to make your own Guide To the Universe and see how much you really know about the solar system.
7 p.m, Leave No Trace Hiking. Join the naturalist at the amphitheater as we learn the simple principles of LNT hiking through a short hike and activities.
4 p. m, Weather Hunt. How do you hunt for weather? With a weather scavenger hunt of course. Stop by the nature center to pick up your list and see if you can figure out how to get all that weather in your bag!
8 p.m., S’mores at the Campfire. Come to the fire ring by the amphitheater to enjoy one of these tasty treats while we celebrate National Smores Day.
8:30 p.m., Night Lights. Fireflies light up the evening skies around Cowans Gap. If you would like to know more about them and how they light up the night, join us at the amphitheater.
Saturday August 11, Persieds Meteor Shower. 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Planispheres. Stop by the nature center to create your own star chart to use during the meteor shower tonight.
8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Meteor Madness on the Beach. Join at the beach for a brief program about meteor showers at 8:30 p.m.. Then enjoy the show in the night sky as you relax beneath the stars. Bring a blanket or chair.
9:15 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Meteor Madness on the Lake. Meet at the amphitheater to enjoy the meteor shower from the middle of the lake. See the stars reflected in the flat water while watching for those shooting stars in the sky! You may want to join us at the beach at 8:30 p.m. for the program on meteor showers before hand. Bring your own boat, or you may register to borrow one of ours. We have a few single kayaks and one tandem available. To borrow a boat, please register online at www.dcnr.pa.gov under the calendar of events or by calling Renae Saum at 717- 485-9018. Life jackets are required for this program and will be provided to those who borrow boats. Participants muyst be at least 12 years old, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Sunday, August 12, International Youth Day. 9 a.m. Walk with Mrs. Cowan. Enjoy a Sunday morning stroll around the lake as Mrs. Cowan tells her tale. A secret wedding, an Indian Chief, and a log cabin all contribute to the story of how Cowans Gap came to be named. Meet at the beach house.
10 a.m. to noon. Wild Side of Weather – Enjoy a leisurely hike along the Lakeside Trail as you learn about the weather. Learn how to read the clouds and learn about weather lore. Find out what weather sayings can help you out and which ones just leave you feeling wet. Learn how to look for changes in the weather to keep you and your family safe when recreating outdoors. Wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring plenty of water. Meet at the beach.
11: 30 a. m., Women’s Kayak. Have you always wanted to try kayaking, but haven’t had a chance? Or perhaps you just want a break away from the guys? Meet at the amphitheater for this “ladies only” paddle around the lake. Bring your own kayak or borrow one of ours: A few single-person kayaks and one tandem will be available to borrow but must be reserved in advance by calling Renae Saum at 717-485-9018 or by registering online under the calendar of events at www.dcnr.pa.gov. Participants must be at least 12 years old, and anyone under 18 years old has to be accompanied by an adult. Life jackets are required for this program and will be provided.
2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Leaf Art. Stop by the nature center to create some art using nature’s own materials. The center will be open for you to explore!
2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Capture the Butterfly. Come out and join us for a butterfly photography session at the nature center garden. Get some tips on photographing butterflies, and then try your hand at it. Exchange tips with other butterfly photographers. Use your own camera or borrow one of the park’s cameras. Participants that borrow a park camera will be able to take their pictures with them on a disk. Bring water and a little patience and you might just capture the butterfly. Meet at the amphitheater.

Monday, August 13, 10 a.m., Birding by the Box. Come learn about cavitynesting birds on this gentle walk in the park. Along the way we’ll peek inside the park’s nesting boxes to see if anyone’s using them! Meet at the park office.
1 p.m, Child’s Play-Trees. Bring your preschool-age children to the park for some fun and learning. Learn about some of the beautiful trees you will find growing at Cowans Gap. Activities for this program may include a story, craft, outdoor exploration or other activity. Playtime can sometimes be messy, so be sure your children are dressed in play clothes and shoes, and have appropriate attire for the outdoors. Child’s Play will begin at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 1 pm.
1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Bingo. Stop by the nature center for a game of nature themed bingo. Bring a friend or the whole family!
