Cowans Gap Activities
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs:
Thursday, August 2: 10 a.m. Litter Brigade. Want to help keep our park looking good and our wildlife safe? Meet at the nature center for a walk around the park to clean up some of the messes others leave behind.
Noon to 1 p.m., Clean the Water: Stop by the table at the beach house to create your own wetland and find out if you can clean the water as well as nature does.
1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Stream Stomp: Join the naturalist for some fun in Little Aughwick creek to see how healthy the stream is. Discover who lives under rocks and in the current! Wear old sneakers or water shoes as we will be in the creek! Meet at the bridge by the Plessinger Trail head.
Friday August 3, 4 p.m., Natures Trivia Game: Think you know a lot about nature? Come to the nature center to find out just how much you know by playing natures trivia game. Bring a team or play on your own.
6:30 p.m., Medicinal Plant Walk: Would you like to know how to cure some common ailments using natural remedies? Join the park naturalist at the amphitheater for a brief walk while we look for some of the plants that have been used for centuries as natural healers.
8: 30 p. m., Owl Prowl: Meet at the nature center for a night hike in search of these nighttime predators. Learn some of their unique features that make them such versatile hunters of the forest after dark.
Saturday August 4, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Recycled Birdfeeders: The nature center will be open for you to enjoy. While you’re there, why not make a recycled birdfeeder to take home?
7 p. m., The Scoop on Poop: The signs animals leave behind can give us valuable clues: who’s been here, what they were doing, even what was for lunch. Come discover some of the many signs you may encounter at Cowans Gap or your own backyard. This program will be held at the amphitheater.
8:30 p.m., Cowans Gap History: Come to the nature center to learn about the history of the park. From the French and Indian War and a secret marriage to the CCC and the many boys that helped build the structures you see around the park today.
Sunday, August 5, 9:30 a.m., Scat Stroll: Meet at the beach house for a stroll around the park in search of evidence left behind by our furry night visitors.
11:30 a.m., Women In the Wild Walk: A program just for the ladies who would like to get out in the woods but don’t want to go it alone! Meet at the nature center for a hike to the overlook above Cowans Gap. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a water bottle.
2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Who’s Head is That?! Stop by the nature center to have a look around and while you are there, see if you can identify the critters just by their skulls!
Monday, August 6, 10 a.m., Birding by the Box; 1 p.m., Childs Play-Scat! Bring your preschool-age children to the park for some fun and learning. Activities for this program may include a story, craft, outdoor exploration or other activity. Playtime can sometimes be messy, so be sure children are dressed in play clothes and shoes, and have appropriate attire for the outdoors. Child’s Play will begin at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 1 p.m.
