Cowans Gap Activities

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs:

Friday, July 13: 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.: Leaf art at the nature center. Stop by the nature center to create some art using nature’s own materials. The center will be open for you to explore!

6 p.m., Kayak Scavenger Hunt. Come out and enjoy a hunt on the lake. Bringr own kayak or borrow one of ours: A few single-person kayaks and one tandem will be available to borrow but must be reserved in advance by calling Renae Saum at 717-485- 9018 or by registering online. Participants must be at least 12 years old, and anyone under 18 years old has to be accompanied by an adult. Life jackets are required for this program and will be provided. Meet at the amphitheater.

8 p.m., Medicinal Plant Walk. Join the park naturalist for a stroll around the park while we search for some of the plants that have been used for centuries as home remedies. Meet at the beach house.

Saturday July 14, 2:30- p.m. to 4 p.m., Clean the Water.

Stop by the table near the beach house to learn how rocks and sand help filter the water. Try creating your own filter to see how you measure up.

7:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m., Buggin’ in the Lake.Would you like to know who lives in the lake? Come to the fishing pier, right down from the beach house, to go “buggin” and find out about the unique adaptations these tiny critters have that allow them to hunt in the lake.

Sunday, July 15, 9 a.m., Scat Stroll. Enjoy a Sunday morning stroll around the lake as we search for ‘signs’ of what creatures were out during the night. Meet at the beach house.

11: 30 a. m., Stream Stomp. Join the naturalist for some fun in Little Aughwick Creek to see how healthy the stream is. Discover who lives under rocks and in the current! Wear old sneakers or water shoes as we will be in the creek! Meet at the bridge by the Plessinger Trail head.

1 p.m., Owl Pellets at the Beach. Stop by the table at the beach house to discover what an owl had for dinner last night!

2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Recycled birdfeeders at the Nature Center. The nature center will be open to explore and while you’re there you can make a birdfeeder out of recycled materials!

Monday, July 16, 10 a.m., Birding by the Box. Come learn about cavity-nesting birds on this gentle walk in the park. Along the way we’ll peek inside the park’s nesting boxes to see if anyone’s using them. Meet at the park office.

1 p. m, Child’s Play- Tracks. Bring preschool-age children to the park for some fun and learning. Learn how to find the critters that live around Cowans Gap. Activities for this program may include a story, craft, outdoor exploration, or other activity. Playtime can sometimes be messy, so be sure your children are dressed in play clothes and shoes, and have appropriate attire for the outdoors. Child’s play will begin at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 1 p.m.
