Cowans Gap Activities

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following programs:

Friday, July 6: 6:30 p.m., CSI-Mammology Division. Become a detective and search for the clues, using GPS, to solve the mystery! Meet at the amphitheater for instructions on how to use hand-held GPS, how to geocache and how to solve the crime!

8:15 p.m.: Yakin’ with the Bats. Enjoy an evening on the lake as we watch the bats come out for the night. Bring your own kayak or borrow one of ours. A few singleperson kayaks and one tandem will be available to borrow but must be reserved in advance by calling Renae Saum at 717-485-9018 or by registering online. Participants must be at least 12 years old, and anyone under 18 years old has to be accompanied by an adult. Life jackets are required for this program and will be provided. Meet at the amphitheater.

Saturday July 7, 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Snowshoeing on the Beach – Yes! You can snowshoe in the summer! Come to the beach and think winter as you try out our snowshoes on the sand.

7 p.m.: Dads & Daughters Walk. It’s National Fathers Take Your Daughter On A Walk Day, so, dads, bring out your girls and enjoy a stroll around the park! You can even bring mom and brothers too ... everyone is welcome. Meet at the Brightbill Interpretive Center.

8:30 p.m., Bat Count! Be part of the ongoing research here at Cowans Gap and help the naturalist count our bats! Meet at the amphitheater for directions.

Sunday, July 8, 9 a.m.: Walk with Mrs. Cowan. Enjoy a Sunday morning stroll around the lake as Mrs Cowan tells her tale. A secret wedding, an Indian chief, and a log cabin all contribute to the story of how Cowans Gap came to be named. Meet at the beach house.

11:30 p.m., Birds, Binoculars & Books. Birding for beginners, binocular lessons, field guides and guaranteed bird sightings! Whether you are an old pro and would like to learn some new tricks or a beginner to watching wildlife, meet at the amphitheater.

Monday, July 9: 10 a.m. Birding by the Box. Come learn about cavity-nesting birds on this gentle walk in the park. Along the way we’ll peek inside the park’s nesting boxes to see if anyone’s using them! Meet at Park Office.

1 p.m.: Child’s Play – Birds! Bring your preschoolage children to the park for some fun and learning! Learn about who lives in the trees at Cowans Gap. Activities for this program may include a story, craft, outdoor exploration or other activity. Playtime can sometimes be messy, so be sure your children are dressed in play clothes and shoes, and have appropriate attire for the outdoors. Child’s Play will begin at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 1 pm.
