Pittsburgh Zoo Announces Birth Of Sea Lion Pup
PITTSBURGH (AP) – A sea lion has been born at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, the third pup born at the zoo in three years and the second to the same mother.
Zoo officials have yet to name the pup, who was born May 31 but announced only Friday.
The pup is the second born to Zoey, who also gave birth to Sidney in 2009.
Another cow, Maggie, gave birth two years ago and is also expected to give birth to a second pup any day.
Zoo officials are keeping a close eye on the pup because the mortality rate is 10 percent to 15 percent in the first month of a sea lion's life, and depends greatly on how well the pup bonds with its mother.
