Cowans Gap Activities Listed

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming programs at Cowans Gap State Park:

Friday, June 22, 2 p.m. – Skull Scatter. Come to the table near the beach house to test your knowledge of animal skulls. See how many you can identify and learn some new ones!

3 p.m. to 5 p.m. – Planishpheres. Stop by the Nature Center to make a planishere to help you recognize the patterns in the night sky. Then join at 8:30 p.m. to hear some of the lore behind the constellations.

6 p.m. Bad Bugs- Meet at the amphitheater for a presentation on some nasty critters that are destroying native trees in Pennsylvania. See some of the damage they have done at Cowans Gap and maybe in your backyard. Also find out what you can do to help prevent the spread of these invasive insects.

8:30pm – Starry Night. Bring a blanket or chair and come to the amphitheater to learn some of the lore of the night skies. Bring your planisphere.

Saturday, June 23, 2:30 p.m. – Stream Stomp. Join the naturalist for some fun in Little Aughwick Creek to see how healthy the stream is. Discover who lives under rocks and in the current! Wear old sneakers or water shoes as we will be in the creek! Meet at the nature center.

8: 15 p. m. – Leave No Trace: Hiking. Join the naturalist at the amphitheater as we learn the simple principles of LNT hiking through a short hike.

Sunday June 24, 9:30 a.m. – Touch Walk. Join the naturalist for a short stroll as we discover all the different textures nature has for us to experience! Also learn what not to touch in the woods! Meet at the beach house

12:30 p.m. – Dragons and Damsels Kayak. Join the park naturalist for a paddle around the lake while we search for dragon flies and damselflies on the hunt! Bring your own kayak or borrow one of ours: A few single-person kayaks and one tandem will be available to borrow but must be reserved in advance by calling Renae Saum at 717-485- 9018 or by registering on line.

Participants must be at least 12 years old, and anyone under 18 years old has to be accompanied by an adult. Life jackets are required for this program. Meet at the amphitheater.

Monday, June 25, 10 a.m. – Birding by the Box. Come learn about cavity-nesting birds on this gentle walk in the park. Along the way we’ll peek inside the park’s nesting boxes to see if anyone’s using them! Meet at the park office.

1 p.m. – Child’s Play, Birds! Bring preschool-age children to the park for some fun and learning. This week the theme is birds. Activities for this program may include a story, craft, outdoor exploration or other activity. Playtime can sometimes be messy, so be sure your children are dressed in play clothes and shoes and have appropriate attire for the outdoors.
