Cowans Gap Activities
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following upcoming public programs:
Friday, June 15: 6 p.m. The Scoop on Poop – The signs animals leave behind can give us valuable clues: who’s been here, what they were doing, even what was for lunch! Come discover some of the many signs you may encounter at Cowans Gap or your own backyard. This program will be held at the amphitheater.
8:30 p.m. – Cowans Gap History. Come to the amphitheater to learn about the history of the park. From the French and Indian War and a secret marriage to the CCC and the many boys that helped build the structures you see around the park today.
Sunday, June 17, 9:30 a.m. – Habitats Walk. Join the park naturalist for a short stroll while we search for areas where the animals that live at the park make their homes. Meet at the beach house.
12:30 p.m. – Insect Kayak. Enjoy an afternoon on the lake while searching for some of the bugs that use the lake every day. Bring own kayak or borrow one of ours. A few single person kayaks and one tandem will be available to borrow but must be reserved in advance by calling Renae Saum at 717-485-9018 or by registering on line. Participants must be at least 12 years old, and anyone under 18 years old has to be accompanied by an adult. Life jackets are required for this program. Meet at the amphitheater.
Monday, June 18, 10 a.m. – Birding by the Box.Come learn about cavity-nesting birds on this gentle walk in the park. Along the way we’ll peek inside the park’s nesting boxes to see if anyone’s using them. Meet at the park office.
1 p.m. – Child’s Play. Live Underwater. Bring preschoolage children to the park for some fun and learning. Learn about who lives under the water at Cowans Gap. Activities for this program may include a story, craft, outdoor exploration or other activity. Playtime can sometimes be messy, so be sure your children are dressed in play clothes and shoes, and have appropriate attire for the outdoors. Child’s Play will begin at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 1 p.m.
