Americanism Essay Winners

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 561 meeting was called to order May 9 at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Auxiliary. An awards presentation was held. There were nine members present and 43 guests.

The Americanism essay contest winners were recognized. This year’s title was “How Can I Show Patriotism In My Community?” The contest was open to any student in Fulton County school districts in grades 3-12 and every junior auxiliary member. One winning essay from each division was chosen. The winning essay from Class Division I (grades 3 & 4) was Shae Ritz, a fourthgrade student from Southern Fulton Elementary School. She is the daughter of Wendy and Todd Ritz.

Class II Division (grades 5 & 6) winner was Ethan Pelton, a fifthgrade student from Southern Fulton Elementary School. He is the son of Dariel and Bill Pelton. Ethan’s essay went on to council level, and was up against Adams, Franklin and York County students. His essay was chosen to go on from there to Department of Pennsylvania. Ethan will read his essay at the Adams, Franklin, Fulton and York County council meeting on June 2 at the Red Lion Post 543.

Class III Division (grades 7 & 8) winner was Alexis Mellott, an eighth grader from Mc- Connellsburg High School. She is the daughter of Alicia and Chris Mellott. This year for the Class III Division it was very difficult to choose one winner. The auxiliary felt there should be an honorable mention award given to Ember Keefer, an eighth grader from McConnellsburg High School. She is the daughter of Heather and Derek Keefer. Her community service to the veterans deserves to be commended.

Class IV Division (grades 9 & 10) winner was Brittney Strawbridge, an eighth grader from Red Land High School. She is the daughter of Christy and Curt Linkhauer from York Haven. Brittney is also a junior auxiliary member of Unit 561 and was the Class III Division winner last years as a seventh grader. There were no entries submitted from Class V Division (grade 11 & 12). Each winner received a certificate and a monetary award from the American

Legion Auxiliary Unit 561.

The eighth- grade Girls Merit Award was also presented to three young ladies from the Fulton County school districts. This award is base don Americanism, honor, scholarship, leadership, service and courage. Alexandra Treml was chosen from Mc- Connellsburg High School. She is the daughter of Chris and Russ Treml. Sarah Wright was chosen from Southern Fulton High School. She is the daughter of Nancy and James Wright. From Forbes Road High School, Rachel Waite received the award. She is the daughter of Tammie and Jeff Waite. There were no eighth grade girls in this year’s class at Fulton County Community Christian School.

Refreshments were provided after the awards presentation. A meeting was held following, with two members voted into the unit. Donations were made to the American Cancer Society, Camp Cadet, Fulton County Library for the summer reading program, Hollidaysburg veterans for bingo and McConnellsburg Class of 2012.
