Local Woman Part Of IUP Sorority Event
Myrissa Peck of McConnellsburg, a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, helped to raise more than $ 3,000 for Autism Speaks, the largest autismawareness organization in the nation.
Peck is a nuclear medicine major at IUP.
The sorority raised the funds through its Quarter Mile project, which involves collecting donations of quarters and laying them side by side along the street in an attempt to create a quarter mile of quarters.
Alpha Xi Delta began autism-awareness events by placing 20 blue spotlights around some of the buildings in IUP’s Oak Grove as part of the national “Light It Up Blue” initiative marking Autism Awareness Month in April. Autism Speaks chose blue to symbolize autism awareness.
Members of Alpha Xi Delta also took part in a presentation about autism by IUP faculty members for the university and community.
