Hundreds Mourn Slain NE Pa. Honors Student, 14
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) – Hundreds have gathered in northeastern Pennsylvania to remember a 14-year-old honors student shot to death as he walked home from a youth sports center.
Mourners marched through the Wilkes-Barre neighborhood where Tyler Winstead grew up Saturday night and stopped at his school, where the eighthgrader played on the basketball team.
Investigators say Tyler Winstead died of a single-gunshot wound to the chest Thursday night. Family members say he had been playing basketball at a Catholic youth center and was headed home.
Family friend Kennard Johnston said at the vigil “I'm in pain because this was senseless.”
Wilkes-Barre Mayor Tom Leighton has vowed to exhaust every resource to bring whoever was responsible to justice.
