Receives Eagle Scout Award
On October 8, 2011, Troop 95 of Shady Grove held an Eagle Scout ceremony for Travis Paul DeShong, son of Tim and Connie DeShong. He was presented the award by Rich Melius, scout master, and Terry Stine, committee chairman.
Deshong started his Scouting career as a Tiger Cub in October 2001. On April 16, 2005 he earned the highest rank of Cub Scouts, the Arrow of Light. At this time he crossed over to Troop 95 as a Boy Scout. He has participated in many scouting events and outings such as summeer camp at Camp Sinoquipe, Scout camporees, National Scout Jamboree, Gettysburg hikes, survival weekends and a trip to Yellowstone National Park.
DeShong was also accepted into the Order of the Arrow Guneukitschik Lodge 317, where he earned his brotherhood membership.
His Eagle Scout project was to scrape, prime and paint the Citizen’s National Bank pavilion at Jerome King playground. He also replaced two trash cans and repaired the charcoal grill. Funding for the project was raised by a ham sandwich sale and donations. The project took a total of 188 hours to complete with the help of Troop 95, family and friends.
After earning the rank of Eagle Scout he also earned the Bronze and Gold Eagle Palms, and continued to earn merit badges for a total of 40 merit badges. After review of his Scouting career, he was presented the Eagle Scout badge, in the presence of family, friends and fellow Scouts.
