Just when everyone was thinking the worst of one of the hardest winters on record was over, another heavy snow fell Wednesday with more on Friday, leaving an accumulation of about nine inches throughout the county, delaying school openings on Thursday and closing them all day Friday.
Thirteen men were injured, five of them requiring hospitalization, in an accident on Friday at 4:30 p.m. on Route 475, a mile south of Hustontown. The accident involved a pickup truck and a van in which nine Grove Co. employees were travelling home form work. Police said a Ford pickup driven by Daniel W. Seville, McConnellsburg, and eastbound on Route 475, failed to negotiate a right curve and skidded across the centerline. The pickup collided with a 1977 Dodge stationwagon van driven by Roger A. Barton of Wells Tannery. Passengers in the pickup were Paul Lee Seville, Terry Keefer and Randy C. Mills, all of McConnellsburg. Passengers in the van were Randy Barton, Wells Tannery; Jesse E. Leinin and Edwin J. Willis, both of Robertsdale; Charles Lehman, Saxton; Robert Horton, Riddlesburg; George W. Shotts, Hustontown; Melvin C. Delucca, Saxton; and Donald W. Foster, Six Mile Run. Both drivers and all passengers were taken to the Medical Center. Shotts, Mills, Delucca and Barton were admitted to the Medical Center and Foster was transferred to Chambersburg Hospital, while the remainder were treated and released.
It would seem a little early in the season for hang gliding, but one hardy soul took off from Tuscarora Summit on Sunday. He landed in the Cito Road area and fortunately was not hurt.
