FR Conducts Routine Business

Won’t consider changing prom venue

The Forbes Road School Board met in regular session last Monday evening, February 6, to conduct routine business and also went into a 35-minute executive session to discuss teacher negotiations at the end of the board meeting.

Earlier during the meeting, the board also held a 12-minute executive session for personnel reasons. At the conclusion of the session, the board approved parttime substitutes for maintenance at $9 per hour for six hours per day with a 30-hour-per-week maximum. The motion carried with all members present in favor with the exception of Merrill Arnold and Karen Peffer, who both abstained.

In other personnel actions, the board granted tenure to Samantha Downey, Angela Gabrielson, Heather Hand and Morgan Stoudnour. The board accepted the resignation of Kevin Bricker as varsity soccer coach effective December 30, 2011, and agreed to hire Beth Bryant as varsity softball coach at the first year rate of $2,000.

Byron Helsel was nominated to fill a new three-year term (July 1, 2012-June 30, 2015) on the Tuscarora Intermediate Board of Directors.

The board also voted to add Dwight Edward Schooley to the custodial substitute list and added Amanda Brown as a bus/van substitute driver and Trent Black as a van substitute driver for Dulce Hall.

Approval was given to enter into an agreement with Invo Health Care Associates for school psychology services as needed.

During miscellaneous business, the board denied a request from the Class of 2014 to consider having the 2013 Junior/Senior Prom at Green Grove Gardens in Greencastle. The motion failed on a roll-call vote, 3-5.

The board approved the following field trips: kindergarten and first grade to Jaffa Shrine in Altoona for the circus on April 19; second through sixth grade to Delgrosso’s Amusement Park in May as a reward trip; the FFA (and possibly the FCCLA and FBLA) to Whitetail Resort on February 22 for snow tubing after school; senior physical education classes to Blue Knob Ski Resort on February 28; and the top 20 percent of the junior class to Franklin and Marshall College

Miscellaneous items on the agenda included: the approval of a request from Snyder Bus Lines to add a new bus for athletics; the approval of a request from Anita Bolinger to purchase a 24- passenger school bus; approval of a request from Ryan Wade to host the 2014 District Jazz Band Festival at Forbes Road; the approval of a request for the use of the high school gym and cafeteria on 3/10, 3/16 and 3/17 for an elementary basketball tournament; and the approval of homebound instruction for a student for the 2011-12 school year.

During a brief financial discussion, authorization was given to change one sentence of the loan agreement to the Delaware Valley Regional Finance Authority as required by the state Department of Education related to the General Obligation Note 2002 series.

At the beginning of the meeting, updates were given on votech meetings, maintenance, the elementary and high schools as well as updates by Superintendent Fred Foster on capital projects and utilization of the old school.

High School Principal Christina Ramsey reported on the recent tragic death of senior Ashlyn Buterbaugh and reported that the proceeds of a recent basketball game and 50/50 raffled of more than $1,000 were given to the family.

The Forbes Road School Board meets the first Monday of each month, and the next regular meeting is scheduled for March 5 at 7:00 p.m.
