Racing Roundup

By Brad Vores

As the 2012 racing season kicks off this week in Georgia, two-time defending World of Outlaws 410 Sprint car champion Jason Meyers announced that he will be retiring from sprint car racing after competing in the first 14 shows of the season.

Meyers, who has become the hottest driver on the WoO tour over the past five seasons, had an off-season dispute with partial car owner Chris Luck and has decided that he will be a father and family man as his first child will start school this year. Luck has since gone on to join forces with Pennsylvania car owner Chad Clemens and formed CL Motorsports and will have Stevie Smith as the driver this season.

Meyers has not finished any worse than fourth in WoO points since 2005 and has won 56 times since then. He will give up a two-time championship trophy with his surprise announcement.

It’s not exactly what the Outlaws need as it appears they will only have about eight full-time teams on tour in 2012, a far cry from several years ago. The Outlaws begin its season next weekend at Florida’s Volusia Speedway Park.

This weekend the All- Star Sprints and World of Outlaw Late Model kick off the season at the Winter Freeze at Georgia’s Screvens Motor Speedway. Many central PA teams will be down south for the next three weeks competing with the All-Stars and World of Outlaws.

All systems are go for Lincoln Speedway to open in just three weeks on February 25 with the Icebreaker 30 for 410 Sprint cars.

Salem United Brethren Church in Chambersburg is gearing up for Race Day on Saturday, March 3. Sprint car driver Lance Dewease and Late Model racer Jim Bernheisel will be two of the drivers on hand to meet fans. Hershey Racing Engines will have a display at the show that will run from 3 p.m. to -p.m. There will be food, door prizes and race cars on display. For more information, visit www.salemub.org.

That’s a wrap for this week as we hope this winter continues down the path that it has! While I know we need some snow, I sure won’t miss it if we don’t get any. Until next time, e-mail reaches me at Bvores@aol.com.
