W. Pa. Councilman Charged With 1979 Killing
BRIDGEWATER, Pa. (AP) – A borough councilman in western Pennsylvania is facing murder charges in the strangulation death of a woman in 1979.
Sixty-five-year-old Gregory Scott Hopkins is a councilman in Bridgewater, Beaver County.
He was arrested Sunday by state police in connection with the death of 23-year-old Catherine Walsh. Investigators said she was found strangled in her Monaca apartment on Sept. 1, 1979.
District Attorney Anthony Berosh says advances in DNA technology helped secure Hopkins' arrest but did not go into detail.
Hopkins was arraigned before District Judge Janet Swihart and is being held in the Beaver County Jail.
Hopkins' attorney, James Ross, was not immediately available for comment.
Online court records say Hopkins is scheduled for a preliminary hearing next week.
