Rust Threatens WW II Sub Docked In Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH (AP) – A World War II submarine that is a popular tourist attraction in Pittsburgh has rusted below the water level, and may need costly repairs.
The Pittsburgh Tribune- Review (http://bit.ly/zblof1 ) reports Saturday that the USS Requin isn’t going to sink, but may need as much as $2 million in repairs.
Officials at the Carnegie Science Center, where the sub is docked, say the Navy inspects the sub annually, but didn’t have the money to assess the damage.
The paper reports that the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County approved a $125,000 grant on Friday to begin determining the damage.
The Requin has been in Pittsburgh since 1990. Visitors can see how the submarine worked, including the tiny kitchen and the cramped bunks in which servicemen slept.
