Ex-fireman’s Suit Over Suicide Heads To Trial
ERIE, Pa. (AP) – A wrongful termination suit brought by a former northwestern Pennsylvania firefighter who tried to kill herself in a fire is set to go to trial.
Jury selection is scheduled for Monday in Mary Wolski’s federal suit against the city of Erie.
Former Wolski sued the city in 2008, claiming she was wrongly fired following a 2006 suicide attempt. She’s seeking reinstatement and back pay.
Wolski has acknowledged setting the fire in hopes the smoke would kill her, but says she was battling severe depression. She claims the firing violates the Americans with Disabilities Act.
City officials Wolski was fired for willful misconduct related to the fire, not her depression.
The Erie Times-News reports Wolski was the first female firefighter in the city's history.
