Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources has issued a fine of $1,250 per county to Fulton, Bedford and Huntingdon counties because the tri-county solid waste management plan update was submitted beyond the DER-imposed deadline. Although the counties, under the auspices of the Bedford Fulton-Huntingdon Solid Waste Authority, working under the guidelines of its original waste management plan, were operating a state-of-the-art lined landfill in Broad Top Township, Fulton County, and were proceeding with municipal approval of the plan update, DER informed the counties last fall that penalties might be imposed for missing the deadline.

A McConnellsburg man who was to stand trial next Monday in the stabbing of a Mount Union man outside McConnellsburg American Legion last September pled guilty Tuesday to a charge of criminal attempt criminal homicide. Weldon Branche, also known as Toby Thomas, McConnellsburg, entered the plea during a session of court January 28.

Farmers in several townships in Fulton County have created or are taking action to create agricultural security areas within various townships as a means of encouraging farming, preserving farmland and discouraging development in these areas.

Ralph Berkstresser III, a teacher for 17 years in the Southern Fulton School District, has recently been nominated by his building principal, Clyde Booth, for The Presidential Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Science. He lives in Needmore with his wife, Cathy, and four daughters: Crystal, Darcy, Megan and Chelsey.

Melissa Garland of McConnellsburg attained the dean’s list for the fall semester at Slippery Rock University.
