W. Pa. Sixth-grader ‘Guilty’ In Attack On Teacher

GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) – A 13-year-old sixthgrader has been convicted of attacking his math teacher who was flipped over and suffered a concussion while trying to break up a fight between the student and another boy.

The Associated Press does not generally report the names of suspects tried in juvenile courts. The boy, a student at Valley Middle School in Arnold, had his hearing Thursday in Westmoreland County Juvenile Court.

The Pittsburgh Tribune- Review reports the 52-yearold teacher, Diane Swigart, testified that she reached down to stop the student who was kneeling on and punching another student. That’s when the boy grabbed her around the neck and flipped her over. She’s still off work from injuries in the Jan. 10 attack, but says she may return next week.

The boy remains in custody and must be sentenced within 20 days.
