Commonwealth Connections Academy (CCA) student Michala Christy, McConnellsburg, doesn’t have just one pet, she has 35. Michala has been raising and breeding rabbits for several years, and two of her Flemish Giant rabbits took home top awards at the 2012 Farm Show.

The Farm Show is the biggest indoor agricultural event in the country, with this year’s rabbit show featuring more than 1,100 entries. Michala showed two Flemish Giant rabbits, a brother and sister, whose mother had won several awards in past competitions.

Michala’s rabbits took home several blue ribbons in the Youth Class, including Flemish Giant Fawn, Best of Variety, and Best of Breed.

As a student at CCA, a public cyber school, Michala is able to balance a full course load with her daily responsibilities as a competitive rabbit breeder.

“It’s a lot of work,” said Michala of her unique hobby. “ My friends and family are very supportive and encourage me to continue.”
