Program Offers Free Tax Help
The Chambersburg TaxAide Program and the AARP Foundation will start February 1, 2012, to offer free tax preparation assistance to low- to moderate-income families, with emphasis on the elderly.
All tax counselors must be certified every year by the Internal Revenue Service. The certification process includes a week of classroom training, computer training, passing a test and signing a Volunteer Standard of Conduct Agreement.
Clients are asked to bring along their 2010 tax returns and all documents relating to income, i.e., wages, interest, dividends, pensions, annuities, broker statements, unemployment compensation, etc., for 2011. If clients wish to itemize deductions, they should have receipts or evidence of payment for all deductible items. Property owners and renters filing for the PA Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program will need their property tax bills marked paid by the local tax collector and/or a copy of the rent receipt signed by their landlord.
Tax returns are done on a firstcome, first-served basis. We will arrange to visit a person’s home who is physically unable to come to one of the sites. All returns can be filed electronically, free of charge.
The TaxAide Program is strictly a volunteer program and receives no funding from the IRS or the AARP. Generous donation of telephone and Internet services from CenturyLink, the use of facilities from the Recreation Department in Chambersburg, the facilities at the American Legion Post 46 and the facilities at the Fulton Theatre owned by Farmers and Merchants Trust Co., Chambersburg, allow the program to provide this service free to clients.
