Judge Grants Bail To Jailed W. Pa. Councilman

ERIE, Pa. (AP) – A western Pennsylvania official who spent Christmas in jail after being convicted of driving with a suspended license for the seventh and eighth times can go home for New Year's.

Erie County Judge Stephanie Domitrovich said 62-year-old county Councilman Ebert Beeman would be released if he posts 10 percent of the $5,000 bond.

The Erie Times-News reports Beeman's wife posted the funds Friday afternoon.

The judge says Beeman must abide by the law upon his release and keep the court apprised of his correct address. She also notes that Beeman is not allowed to drive.

Beeman's ultra-libertarian views have also prompted the IRS to seek $2.1 million in back taxes, penalties and interest from him. His lawyer says the IRS has wrongly inflated the amount owed.
