Denise Lynn Buterbaugh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin

Buterbaugh of McConnellsburg, was born at 7:18 p.m. on the first day of 1972. As the first baby born at the local hospital in the new year, Denise Lynn will receive savings bonds from each of the local banks. Dr. R.C. McLucas was the attending physician.

Theodore LeRoy Wells, 41, of Baltimore, was killed accidentally on Saturday on his property, two miles south of Waterfall. The accident happened when a limb from a tree, which was being sawed, fell on him.

The Wells-Taylor Elementary School building on Route 655 was broken into Friday night or early Saturday morning and all the classrooms and other rooms in the building were ransacked. Entry was gained by prying open an east door.

County officials were sworn in by Judge George C. Eppinger at the county courthouse on Monday morning. Pictured in this issue are: county commissioners Delmar Mellott, Frank Bivens and W. Edward Palmer; Sheriff Charles Waters; Treasurer Roy W. Gordon; District Justice George Albert; county auditors Connie Fore, Wayne Decker and Donald Bard, and Wells Township assessor Harry Roscoe Swope.

The birth rate in the United States fell dramatically during 1971 to one of the lowest levels in history. According to the estimate, the rate dropped to 17.3 births per thousand people, a dramatic dip from the 18.3 births per thousand recorded in 1970.

Sandra K. Miller qualified for the dean’s list at Harrisburg Area Community College for the fall term. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Wayne Miller of McConnellsburg.

Esta Gray, registrar of births and deaths for Fulton County, reports that there were 2,897 births and 109 deaths in the county during 1971, compared to 275 births and 111 deaths during 1970.

Engagements: Mr. and Mrs. Donald Mc- Quade of McConnellsburg wish to announce the engagement of their daughter, Linda Lou, to Jack Glessner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Glessner of Shippensburg. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Mellott of Needmore announce the engagement of their daughter, Carol Ann, to Percy Rock Jr., son of Mrs. Lillian McCleaf. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lodge announce the engagement of their daughter, Melissa Jane, to Roger Paul Horton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul N. Horton of Wells Tannery.

Army Private II Donald E. Sipes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Sipes of Needmore, recently completed nine weeks of advanced individual training at Fort Polk, La.

Fulton Builders Supply has been awarded a nine-day trip to Spain by the I.H. Hershner Carpet Co. of York. Marcus Downes will represent the local firm on the trip, leaving on February 19.

Births at the Medical Center: a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Black of Greencastle on December 24; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Nonemaker of Waterfall on December 25.

Marine Cpl. Roger L. Hensley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hill of Hancock, has returned to the United States with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 333 after a sixmonth cruise in the Mediterranean aboard the aircraft carrier USS America, homeported at Norfolk, Va.
