Racing Roundup

By Brad Vores

When the 2012 410 Sprint car season kicks off in central PA, there will be a big change coming at both Williams Grove and Lincoln speedways.

Both tracks will be using a pill draw for heat races for all non time trial shows in 2012 for their 410 Sprint car events. This will be the first time the tracks have changed from the normal handicapping by either average points (Lincoln) and average money won (Williams Grove).

While the heats will be lined up by draw, they will also have a slight hint of handicapping as the averages will be used to spread out the drivers who perform the best. That means should there be three heat races on any given night, the top three average drivers will be in three separate heats.

Drivers qualifying in the top spots will then be lined up by their averages for feature events. A redraw will not be used for features.

Port Royal Speedway adopted the draw last season and the management team has been given the option to join the new format but no word on what direction Port Royal will take. Draws are used for both heats and features at the Port .

Williams Grove will also continue to pay the bonus program for its 410 Sprint events despite the new format.

The Grove opens on Friday, March 23.

As 2011 comes to an end and we approach the holiday season, I’d like to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year. We will be taking a few weeks off, so we’ll see you in 2012!
