Ira R. Shafer
Ira R. Shafer, 101, Fresno, Calif., and formerly of Mount Union, died Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at his residence.
Born April 19, 1910, in Fort Littleton, he was the son of the late Harvey J. and Myrtle (Hamilton) Shafer. He was united in marriage to the former Helen E. Brandt. She preceded him in death October 3, 2000.
He is survived by his daughter, Ann S. Bierbower of Fresno, Calif.; his grandchildren: Jonathan Topper, Boston, Mass., and Faye Bierbower, Dillsburg; and three great-grandchildren.
He was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Mount Union.
He was a member of the Mount Union Rotary, a member of the board of directors of Union National Bank in Mount Union and was chairman of the Huntingdon County Planning Commission.
He was employed for 37 years as plant superintendent at Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corp. in Mapleton, currently the U.S. Silica Corp.
Private graveside services were held at the convenience of the family at Mount Union Cemetery.
