Veterans To Be Honored Friday
The county’s two veterans service organizations are set to honor military veterans at an 11 a.m. Veterans Day service this Friday, November 11.
Cosponsored by the Mc- Connellsburg American Legion Post 561 and Veterans of Foreign War Post 655, the service will take place at the county courthouse in McConnellsburg.
Robert D. Huffman Sr., commander, Legion Post 561, is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the morning observance held here every year.
Also participating are the Fulton Honor Guard; master of ceremonies Ed Stenger, county veterans affairs director; Robert C. Snyder, Fulton Honor Guard chaplain, who will give the invocation and benediction; and the combined bands of McConnellsburg and Forbes Road high schools, peforming the national anthem and other patriotic music.
Veterans Day is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)
Refreshments will be served at the American Legion home, 411 North Fifth Street, following the service. In the event of inclement weather, organizers say the service will be held inside the American Legion.
