New Franklin And Marshall President Touts Liberal Education’s Value
LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) – The newest president of Franklin and Marshall College says he wants to continue the great work currently being done there.
Daniel Porterfield was inaugurated Sunday as the 15th president of the 224- year-old liberal arts school.
The Intelligencer Journal/ Lancaster New Era reports Porterfield touted the merits of a traditional education in an increasingly hightech world. Teaching critical thinkers “is what we’ll be doing 100 years from now,’’ he said.
But Porterfield is embracing social media as he tries to connect with younger students. The new president has posts blog entries and Twitter messages, besides opening his office on Fridays with a standing offer of ice cream for student visitors.
The Intelligencer Journal/ Lancaster New Era report (http://bit.ly/qLZH4K) says Securities and Exchange Commission chairwoman Mary Schapiro, a 1977 graduate, gave the keynote address.
Porterfield replaces John Fry, who left to head Drexel University last year.
