F.C. Fair Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest Winner Announced

Did you see all those apple pies at the Fulton County Fair? Our own hometown bakers created those special pies for competition in the annual Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest.

This year’s Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest winner was Pamela Foor from Everett.

Caramel Pecan Crunch

Apple Pie

Crust:

½ cup Crisco

2 ½ cups flour

1/4 tsp. salt

1/3 cup water

With a pastry blender combine Crisco, flour and salt until pea-sized. Add water and form into dough. Refrigerate 15 minutes. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Filling:

9 cups sliced apples

1/4 cup butter

1 cup apple juice

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

1/2 cup caramel syrup

3 T. cornstarch

In large saucepan heat, juice, sugar, butter, caramel and cinnamon. Add apples and cook until tender. With slotted spoon remove apples. To cooked mixture add 1 tsp. vanilla and cornstarch. Let thicken. Remove from heat; add apples and set aside.

20 caramels, melted; add 1 1/2 T. half and half. Pour over apple mixture. Line pie pan with crust. Spoon in apple mix. Sprinkle with ½ c. chopped pecans.

Crumb Topping

½ cup butter

1 cup flour

½ chopped pecans

½ tsp cinnamon

Mix everything in small bowl til crumbs form. Sprinkle on top of pie. Bake 375 degrees for 50-60 minutes or until apple are done. Let cool.

1/2 cup ice cream caramel topping.

When cool drizzle with topping and garnish with nuts.

More than 100 fairs across the state are offering cash prizes as part of the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest. Fulton County’s contest is a preliminary competition that leads to the selection of the final Blue Ribbon Apple Pie winner to be held each January at the Pennsylvania State Farm Show. This year’s contest was once again sponsored by The Pennsylvania Apple Marketing Board, The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs.
