Racing Roundup

By Brad Vores

A pill draw determined the outcome of the entire night in Saturday night’s Tuscarora 50 at Port Royal Speedway.

Stevie Smith drew the best pill of the night and that set the tone for the Broken Arrow, Okla., racer as he won his heat race, the dash and then led all 50 laps of the Tuscarora 50 to bring home the $12,500 payday for the Zemco Racing Team.

The win was the third overall on the season for Smith.

Several cautions and a Lap 25 fuel stop were the only setbacks in Smith’s domination of the event on a wet and fast track.

Danny Dietrich finished in the runner-up spot for his best-ever Port Royal finish with Justin Henderson, Doug Esh and Harrionsville’s Mike Wagner completing the top five finishers.

Todd Shaffer, Daryn Pittman, Lance Dewease, Chad Layton and Greg Hodnett were the top-10 finishers.

With his fifth-place finish, Mike Wagner clinched his second career Port Royal 410 Sprint car track championship. Ryan Taylor led going into the final event but failed to qualify for the “50.” Taylor was added a track provisional but finished 20th. It was the second career track title for Wagner, with his first one coming 20 years ago in the 1991 season. Despite not winning a feature during either of those seasons, Wagner proved consistency can win championships. Congrats to the entire Wagner Motorsports team on the title!

Jeff Rine continued his late season dominance in the late season Late Model races at Port Royal as he scored the 25-lap feature win. It was his second straight win and third of the season in just a handful of starts at the track this year.

Mitch Hack finished in the runner-up spot over Bob Dunn, Mike Lupfer and Todd Snook.

There were 45 Sprints and 30 Late Models on hand for the season finale at Port Royal.

Eighteen-year-old Logan Schuchart turned in an impressive run in Saturday night’s 25-lap 358 Sprint car championship at Lincoln Speedway.

Schuchart started 21st in the field and raced his way to the front and despite contact with race-long leader Pat Cannon on the final lap, the Spring Grove driver picked up the win.

He became the only repeat winner in 15 358 Sprint car races this season at Lincoln, and the win was the eighth overall on the season for Schuchart.

Cannon, whose father Bill passed away last week, finished second over Chad Trout, TJ Stutts and Niki Young. Harrisonville’s Logan Wagner had a good night and ended up finishing sixth, his best career Lincoln 358 Sprint car finish. Jeff Rohrbaugh finished 11th and captured another 358 Sprint car track championship.

Gene Knaub won Susquehanna Speedway’s 358 Late Model feature Saturday for his 14th overall win of the season over Chris Knopp, Charles Potts, Bob Minnich and Carl Billet.

Matt Mountz won the PA 305 Sprints over Erin Statler and Mark Watkins.

Racing was rained out during the weekend both Friday and Saturday at Williams Grove, Friday at Trail-Way, Friday at Port Royal and Saturday at Selinsgrove.

That will do it for this week as we continue to enjoy a week in South Carolina. Until next time, e-mail at Bvores@comcast.net.
