Gary L. Peck, 18, McConnellsburg, was rushed to Chambersburg Hospital early Friday morning in critical condition from injuries he suffered in an automobile accident on Route 16 near the Summit of Cove Mountain. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Peck of McConnellsburg. Emergency surgery was performed at Chambersburg and his left leg was amputated above the knee. His condition is listed as “good.”

Many persons have recently purchased handguns for protection and secured the proper protection permits. Many of these purchasers are unfamiliar with firearms. The Fulton County Pistol and Rifle Club will give free instructions in safe gun handling at its range, located east of McGovern’s schoolhouse.

News of men in service: Pfc. Dale R. Deneen, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Deneen of Chambersburg, formerly of Needmore, recently completed his active duty training with the U.S. Army Reserve. U.S. Air Force Sgt. Ronald J. Hunsinger, son of Mrs. Betty Hunsinger of New Cumberland, has arrived for duty at Yukota Air Force Base, Japan. Harry A. Sipes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Darrel E. Sipes of McConnellsburg, began a four-year enlistment in the U.S. Air Force on September 9. He reported for basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Engagement: Mr. and Mrs. James Deneen of Chambersburg, formerly of Needmore, announce the engagement of their daughter, Linda, to David Dombrowsky, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Phillip Dombrowsky of Hancock.

Miss Linda Johnson has earned her master’s degree in physical education at Illinois University, Champaign, Ill., and has accepted a position at the Allegany Community College in Cumberland, Md.

Nearly 100 persons attended groundbreaking ceremonies last Saturday afternoon for the new Broad Top Area Medical Center, which is scheduled to get started early next year on a plot of ground located in Broad Top City Borough.

Births at the Medical Center: a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Dayton Harr of Mc- Connellsburg on September 4; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Seville Jr. of Big Cove Tannery on September 6; a son to Mr. and Mrs. David Shearer of Doylesburg on September 6; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Gary Fischer of Crystal Spring on September 8; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Hershey of Harrisonville on September 10.

A surprise birthday party was held on Sunday afternoon to honor Lloyd Fleming on his 80th birthday at the home of his son, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Fleming of Hustontown.
