Hundreds of firefighters from five states were in McConnellsburg last

Thursday, Friday and Saturday as the McConnellsburg Volunteer Fire Co. hosted the 90th annual convention of the CumberlandValley VolunteerFiremen’sAssociation. The convention culminated with an hour-long parade through downtown featuring more than 100 pieces of both modern and antique firefighting equipment and some marching units and bands.

The BiLo Market of McConnellsburg came away from Saturday night’s bidding with both the grand champion and the reserve champion steers, paying $2.20 and $2 per pound, respectively, for the 1,285- and 1,237-pound steers. It was a family affair this year as the grand champion steer owned by Scott Knepper of Hustontown brought $2,827, while the reserve champion, “Dummy,” owned by Scott’s younger brother, Ben, brought $2,474. Fulton County National Bank was the biggest buyer at the sale, carrying on their longstanding tradition of buying four steers and donating one each to the McConnellsburg, Needmore, Hustontown and Shade Gap fire companies.
