Cowans Gap Activities

Activities at Cowans Gap State Park for the week are as follows:

Friday, September 2: 7 p.m. – Kayaks. Take a peaceful paddle with the naturalist around Cowans Gap Lake. Learn a bit of park history, see some neat insects and look for signs of fall in the trees. Meet at the amphitheater.

Saturday, September 3: Visit the Brightbill Interpretive Center; 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. – Family Backpack Adventure. Is your family looking for something to do this afternoon? Why not go on an adventure! Stop by the nature center to pick up a themed, loaner backpack with activities and materials to spend a couple fun hours together in the outdoor; 4:30 p.m. – PA’s Natural Symbols. Walk the One Mile Trail to see how many of the symbols you know. Meet at the park office; 8 p.m. – Owl Prowl. Let’s see if we can call up an owl or two and find out how neat these nocturnal birds are. Meet near Site 1, of camping loop A.

Sunday, September 4: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. – Visit the Brightbill Interpretive Center; 4:30 p.m. – Bluebird Trail. Let’s get the bluebird boxes ready for next year. Learn about these cavity nesters while we walk around the park. Meet at the nature center; 7 p.m. – Bird Nests. Birds work really hard making the perfect place to raise their young. Join in a fun activity to see how well you can build a bird nest. Meet at amphitheater.

Monday, September 5: 9:30 a.m. – Kayaks. If you missed out on the kayaks on Friday evening come to the amphitheater this morning to see what animals are up and about. Five one-man kayaks are available for use – first come, first served, or bring your own; noon to 3 p.m. – Visit the Brightbill Interpretive Center – Fish For Free! Labor Day is the Fish and Boat Commission’s second Fish For Free day for 2011. This day allows anyone (resident, or non resident) to legally fish with no fishing license required to fish on all PA’s waterways on this day. All other fishing regulations still apply.
