UPMC Lawyer Tells County ‘No Deal’ With Highmark
PITTSBURGH (AP) – The chief legal officer for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center tells Allegheny County Council there’s no chance of a new contract between the Pittsburgh region’s largest hospital network and its largest health insurer, Highmark Inc.
State and local officials have been urging both sides to negotiate a new contract before the current deal expires on June 30, 2012. If the deal expires, Highmark customers will have to pay outof network rates for UPMC hospitals and doctors.
According to the Pittsburgh Post- Gazette (http://bit.ly/nMNB5v), UPMC attorney W. Thomas Mc- Gough (mc-GAW’) reiterated UPMC’s position at council’s Wednesday meeting. Mc- Gough that no new deal is possible now that Highmark is taking over UPMC’s chief competitor, the West Penn Allegheny Health System.
Council members expressed hope a deal can still be done, but McGough says, “This is not a negotiating ploy.’’
