SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Forbes Road Fury Girls Softball Team Forbes Road Fury Girls Softball Team July 14, 2011: The Forbes Road Fury capped off another excellent season with their second consecutive championship of the Southern Huntingdon Girls Modified Softball League. The Fury entered the playoff series as the fourth seed, affording them home-field advantage for a 16-11 first-round victory over Path Valley. Traveling to top-seed Trough Creek for the second round, Forbes Road again proved victorious in a 14-11 nail-biter, setting the stage for a championship matchup with second seed Rock Hill.

As the lower seed, Forbes Road served as the visiting team and immediately set the tone for the game. Fury batters posted five runs in the top of the first, capitalizing on three walks and big hits off the bats of Maiah Mellott and Bridgette Ritchey. Rock Hill answered with five in the bottom of the frame to tie the score, but the Fury responded with one run in the top of the second to retake the lead. Behind the steady pitching of Tina Parsons, Forbes blanked the top seed in the bottom of the second, setting the score at 6-5. The Fury then took over the game, posting four runs in the third and three more in the fourth while holding Rock Hill to just one over those frames for a 13-6 lead.

Rock Hill refused to go quietly, however, holding the Fury bats silent in the fifth before posting three runs in the bottom of the frame to close to within 13-9. Forbes proved just as stubborn, fighting back with a threerun sixth inning rally started by Ritchey’s second hit of the game. Payton Watkins and Lillie Wilt drove in runs in the frame, stretching the Fury lead to 16-10 entering the seventh inning.

While the Fury did not score in the top of the seventh, Rock Hill attempted a last gasp rally. Parsons again stymied their bats. After a lead-off strikeout, two walks and a base hit plated a run and gave the top seed hope. Parsons quieted the rally by whiffing her seventh batter. With two outs, Olivia Hall snared a line drive in the hole between shortstop and third base to clinch the championship by a 16- 11 final, touching off a celebration in the pitcher’s circle.

The Fury offense was fueled by Katelyn Doney (1H, 2R), Olivia Hall (1H, 3R), Maiah Mellott (1H, 3R), Bridgette Ritchey (2H, 3R), Courtney Schoen (3R), and Payton Watkins (1H, 2 RBI). Mara Broadwater ( 1H, 2RBI) and Shelby Harnish also scored for the Fury. Solid defense from the Forbes Road squad kept the game under control, as they committed only two errors in support of Parsons. Parsons pitched the final six innings for the win, striking out seven while surrendering only five runs (2 earned).

The Fury team is a member of Forbes Road Youth Baseball & Softball, playing their home games at the Forbes Road Lions Club Park. Appleby’s Drug Store sponsors the team.
