Charles R. Kirk

Hustontown, 91

Charles Richard Kirk, 91, Hustontown, died at home Friday, June 8, 2011.

Born June 26, 1920, at Fremont, Chester County, Pa., he was the son of Mary S. and Pinkney J. Kirk.

He served in the U. S. Army in active duty from 1941 to 1945 in the European Theater of Operations and also in the China-Bur-ma–India campaign with the 329th Air Service Corps. He retired from the 2375th Army Reserve Engineer Group in 1965.

He was a graduate of Oxford High School in Oxford and Penn State University with a master’s degree in forestry.

He was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service from 1951 to 1987. He resided in McConnellsburg from 1951 to 1958, in Leesport, Pa., from 1958 to 1973 , Bloomsburg, Pa., 1973 to 1976, Manheim, Lancaster County from 1976 to 1987, and Hustontown, from 1987 to 2011.

He was married to Elinor Clement Kirk, who died in 2009.

He is survived by brother Isaac A. Kirk, Sandy Spring, Md.; son Malcolm W. Kirk of Niwot, Colo., and Hustontown; grandsons Thomas R. Kirk and Timothy D. Kirk of Niwot, Colo.; daughter Nancy L. Kirk, wife of Anthony Pugliese; grandchildren Elinor R. Pugliese and Samuel J. Pugliese of Shrewsbury, Pa.

He was a member of the Religious Society of Friends.

Following the wishes of Dick and Elinor, a picnic will be held later in the summer.
